AUTONOMY

The Master seemed quite impervious to what people thought of him.
When the disciples asked how he had attained this stage of inner freedom,
he laughed aloud and said,
"Till I was twenty I did not care what people thought of me.
After twenty I worried endlessly about what my neighbors thought.
Then one day after fifty I suddenly saw that they hardly ever thought of me at all."

Anthony de Mello, SJ

If you don't run your own life, somebody else will.

"Do dvajsetega leta me ni zanimalo, kaj si ljudje mislijo o meni.
Po dvajsetem me je nenehno skrbelo, kaj si mislijo moji sosedi.
In potem, nekega dne, po petdesetem,

SIN

One of the disconcerting - and delightful - teachings of the Master was:
"God is closer to sinners than to saints."

This is how he explained it:
"God in heaven holds each person by a string.
When you sin, you cut the string.
Then God ties it up again, making a knot and thereby bringing you a little closer to him.
Again and again your sins cut the string
and with each further knot God keeps drawing you closer and closer."

DECEPTION

"How shall we distinguish the true mystic from the false?"
asked the disciples who had an inordinate interest in the occult.

"How do you distinguish the true sleeper from the one who is feigning sleep?" asked the Master.

"There's no way. Only the sleeper knows when he is feigning," said the disciples.

The Master smiled.

Later he said,
"The feigning sleeper can delude others - he cannot delude himself.
The false mystic, unfortunately, can delude both others and himself."

Igračka vjetrova
(Tin Ujević)

Pobratimstvo lica u svemiru

Ne boj se, nisi sam! Ima i drugih nego ti
Koji nepoznati od tebe žive tvojim životom.
I ono sve što ti bje, ču i što sni
Gori u njima istim žarom, ljepotom i čistotom.

Ne gordi se! Tvoje misli nisu samo tvoje! One u drugima žive.
Mi smo svi prešli iste putove u mraku,

I snagu nam, i grijehe drugi s nama dijele.

A naša krv, i poraz svih, u klanju,
Opet je samo jedna historija duša.

Strašno je ovo reći u uho oholosti,
No vrlo srećno za očajničku sreću,
Da svi smo isti u zloći i radosti,
I da nam breme kobi počiva na pleću.

Ja sam u nekom tamo neznancu, i na zvijezdi
Dalekoj, raspreden, a ovdje u jednoj niti,

Jer sam ipak ja, svojeglav i onda kad me nema,
I ja sam šiljak s vrha žrtvovan u masi;
O vasiono! Ja živim i umirem u svijema;
Ja bezimeno ustrajem u braći!

RECKLESSNESS

The Master always insisted that we must learn by ourselves -
teach ourselves - rather than depend on other people's authority.
This had its limits, of course,
as when a bright young fellow was convinced he ought to try drugs as a means to mysticism -
- and "take the risk, for one can only learn by trial and error."

That moved the Master to tell the old story of the nail and the screw:

"Here is one way to find out whether what you need in a plank is a nail or a screw:
Drive the nail in. If it splits the plank, you know you needed the screw."

Anthony de Mello, SJ

O spoznaju samega sebe

In neki možje dejal: Govori nam o spoznanju samega sebe.
In on je spregovoril:

Vaša srca v tišini spoznavajo skrivnost noči in dneva.

     Prav je, da to želite.
     Skrivnostni vrelec vaše duše mora privreti na dan in odžuboreti proti morju;
In zaklad vaših neskončnih globin naj se razkrije vašim očem.
     Vendar ne tehtajte vašega neznanega zaklada stehtnico;

DESTRUCTION

For all his holiness, the Master seemed vaguely opposed to religion.
This never ceased to puzzle the disciples who, unlike the Master, equated religion with spirituality.

"Religion as practiced today deals in punishments and rewards.
In other words, it breeds fear and greed - the two things most destructive of spirituality."

Later he added ruefully, "It is like tackling a flood with water; or a burning barn with fire."

Anthony de Mello, SJ

and hope for reward,
then we are a sorry lot indeed.

VIOLENCE

The Master was always teaching
that guilt is an evil emotion to be avoided like the very devil - all guilt.

"But are we not to hate our sins?" a disciple said one day.

"When you are guilty, it is not your sins you hate but yourself."

Anthony de Mello, SJ

Fear is the tax that conscience pays to guilt.

OPPRESSION

The Master always left you to grow at your own pace.
He was never known to "push." He explained this with the following parable:

"A man once saw a butterfly struggling to emerge from its cocoon,
too slowly for his taste, so he began to blow on it gently.
The warmth of his breath speeded up the process all right.
But what emerged was not a butterfly but a creature with mangled wings.

"In growth," the Master concluded, "you cannot speed the process up.
All you can do is abort it."

Roke so bile še vedno dvignjene.
Potem ga je pobral, zmečkanega in umazanega.
"Kdo si ga želi sedaj?" Roke so bile še vedno v zraku.

The Healing Power of Touch

Lying alone in a small bassinet in a remote village hospital, a tiny newborn girl appeared lifeless. Doctors could barely hear her irregular heartbeat and could not control her fluctuating temperature. She'd slipped into this world too early - seven weeks premature. The doctors on call agreed - the palm-sized infant had a few days time before she passed from this world.

In the bassinet next to the dying twin lay her twin sister - healthier, but fretting while sleeping. Due to more births that night and a shortage of beds, doctors placed the twins together. The healthy sleeping newborn immediately stopped fretting and snuggled up to her sickly sister.

Nothing changed at first. But as the hours passed, a nurse noted significant changes in the weaker infant: Her heartbeat normalized and her skin tone grew pink. The nurses kept close watch over the twin sisters for the next few days. The tiny girls were often found embracing - and always touching. Each day, the condition of the once-frail baby improved. Her recovery baffled the doctors.

But it shouldn't have. That tiny child was yet another example of the wondrous healing power of the strongest of all medicines - touch.

There is a story of a young scholar from a privileged family
who spends most of his time reading and studying the great teachings.

One day, while traveling, he comes to a wide river and finds a boatman to take him across.

During the crossing, to pass the time, the scholar describes his lifetime of studies.
As he does, the boatman listens attentively.

Then, after a time, he says to the young man,
"You have learned much, sir-but have you learned how to swim?"

"Why, no," he replies. "I have not."

"Then I'm afraid your knowledge is of little use," says the boatman, "for this boat is sinking."

VANITY

The Master frequently reminded his disciples that holiness,
like beauty, is only genuine when unselfconscious.

He loved to quote the verse:

       "She blooms because she blooms;
the Rose does not ask why,
nor does she preen herself to catch my eye."

And the saying: "A saint is a saint until he knows that he is one."

Anthony de Mello, SJ
