A person having a panic attack may fear they are dying or "going crazy."
The depression, shame, and agonizing sense of isolation caused by eating disorders can disrupt families, interrupt schooling, damage careers, and destroy relationships. Without treatment, the future is bleak; however, with psychological counseling, often in conjunction with medications such as PROZAC, people can recover and live normal, productive lives. Group therapy, in which people share their experiences with others who have similar problems, has been especially effective for resolving underlying emotional issues.
Bulimia typically begins during early adulthood; however, many people do not seek help until they reach their 30s or 40s. By this time, their eating behavior may be deeply ingrained and more difficult to change. For that reason, people with bulimia who get early treatment have a better chance of full recovery than those who wait years before getting help. A combination of psychotherapy and medication may be the best form of therapy for bulimic patients.
Panic disorder causes severe, uncontrollable anxiety (fear and nervousness) in response to ordinary situations. These repeated episodes of intense fear—called panic attacks—are usually accompanied by a variety of physical symptoms. Such symptoms can include shortness of breath, dizziness, sweating, chest pain, heart palpitations, racing heart, stomach upset, and others.
The symptoms of panic disorder can be very frightening. At first, many people think they may be having a heart attack or dying. Some visit the emergency room again and again before finally being diagnosed with panic disorder.
