By signing the »Vilnius group« declaration, Slovene government appealed to the UN Security Council to endorse military action against Iraq. The government also justified in advance an eventual not-UN-warranted aggression against Iraq. No political party in Slovenia has the mandate to push the country into participation to an aggressive war, to incite to a military invasion and to advocate acts in violation of the UN Charter. No political party has proposed such actions in the programs offered to the electoral body during the elections. The Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia states in its article 124: »The State provides for its security primarily by peace politics and by enforcing the culture of peace and non-violence.« If this is the committment in security politics, it is so much more a principle that should direct the international politics of Slovenia.
We do not want to share responsibility for killing, displacing people, for hunger, illness and misery of millions. We believe that many our co-citizens share the same position. We know that millions in Europe and in the world oppose the eventual war against Iraq. We want that Slovene government lends ear to the peaceful peoples of the world and that it commits itself to an active policy for a peaceful and more just world. Therefore we request that the Government of Slovenia withdraws its support to the declaration of ten Ministers of Foreign Affairs of East European Governments.
