The History of SKA

Politics has always played an important role in music. Think of Bands like U2 with “Bloody Sunday” all about the civil war in Ireland, or Bruce Springsteen singing about the working class in the USA. But Ska and Punk may be the most political of music genres. The following is a brief history of ska and some of the most influential political ska bands. This looks at how ska has played a major role in the anti racism and skinhead scene. Feel free to share your thoughts and opinions.

Ska was born in Jamaica during the 50’s out of a coming of musical elements mento and jazz Ska went on to became the national music of Jamaica. Ska became the anthem for rebellious out of work youth reacting against black economic tensions. They emulated Hollywood gangster fashion wearing black suits thin ties and pork pie hats they called themselves rude boys lived outside the laws. The songs reflected this movement “Shanty Town”, “A message to you Rudy” and “Judge Dread”. In 1966 ska beat was slowed down and rock steady was born. Rock steady was inspired by the influence of the American R& B scene “Tide is High” in an example of a rock steady song. In 1969 the Israelites by Desmond Decker became the first Jamaican produced to become # 1 in Britain. Ska was imported to England with the immigrant of the early 60’s known as blue beat the first hit in

England was “My boy lollipop” Ska was adopted by the mod scene and gained a steady popularity. In 1979 the revival spread from England to the rest of the world with the help of 2Tone records a record label established Jerry Dammers (key boardest from the Specials). He signed bands like Madness, The Specials, The English Beat, the Body Snatchers and The Selector.2 Tone label reflected the multi racial memberships and relied heavily on pre existing ska songs, such as “A Message to you Rudy” and “Shanty Town”. There also new songs which reflected the political turmoil going around. Songs like " Free Nelson Mandela”, “Racist Friend” and “Ghost Town” The fun of Punk Rock was also incorporated into ska. The original early ska bands such as Prince Buster and Jimmy Cliff made more money from royalties paid by cover artists than ever made from their own album sales. Two Tone was a faster and harder than the original ska music.

3rd wave ska are bands like No Doubt, Hepcat, Rancid, and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones who tend to favor a harder ska core fused with punk rock. The sound of these bands is varied the musical characteristics for the original ska can still be heard although sometimes is not as obvious. 3rd wave has revived the two tone bands, who have recently began to go on tour as The Selector and The English Beat.
